At the same time, is it surprising?
Barely released, Cyberpunk 2077 is the subject of all the comparisons between different versions, and it looks like the versions on Xbox One and PS4 have been heavily downgradées. Endless loading, textures that appear at the last moment, resolution between 720p and 900p on PS4, 720p on Xbox One, appalling decrease in the number of NPCs, disappearance of many special effects, explosions and lights, all this not to mention the framerate which oscillates mainly between 15 and 25 images per second.
The game luckily performs much better on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, similar to the Xbox Series X versions in performance mode, but at 30 FPS. It’s no surprise on PS5 and especially Xbox Series X where it offers the best on console. Compared to the PS5, the Xbox Serties X also offers the choice between performance or graphics. In performance mode, many NPCs disappear to ensure a smoother framerate. However, keep in mind that these are still PS4 and Xbox versions that have not yet received an upgrade, performance and visual should logically improve when it arrives.
A Stadia version that is doing very well
On Stadia, the game is doing as well as on next gen consoles, which may give it a strong argument against owners of Xbox One and PS4. It renders far above older-gen consoles and is unaffected by their issues, and if you stick to 1080p, there’s not even a subscription to pay.
Of course, it is on PC where the game has the best performance. However, if we take into account the majority hardware, ie a PC equipped with a 1060, it reaches 43 FPS at ultra in 1080p. It may be a new graphics standard on PC for some time. The RTX 2070 and the RX 5700 XT seem to be the gateway to playing in very good conditions at 1080p-1440p, but better instead to head to the RTX 3080 and the 6800Xt for excellent rendering at ultra at 1440p, see in 3200X1800.
Too ambitious a game?
It has always been a tradition that a game from time to time is ahead of its time in performance. Crysis has been unable to run properly on PC for over two years. The Witcher 3 when it was released suffered many muscular configurations of the moment. And then, you have to take into account that the day one patch has not been deployed and that we are talking about ultra graphics. By lowering the settings on PC, the game remains beautiful and playable.
So too ambitious? It is a game designed for the new generation of consoles and graphics cards. Put it next to a GTA V and the difference is huge. It is clear that the best would have been to wait another two years for the fleet of new consoles to be installed, and for the next generation of graphics cards to make it accessible to mid-range machines. Except that CD Projekt Red must sell its game. Looking back, GTA V suffered from similar problems on Xbox 360 and especially on PS3, except that the next gen and PC versions released later did not allow a comparison. instantly. The framerate is more like 25 FPS, and the streets are hopelessly sparsely populated compared to the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Except that without its simultaneous release on next gen, Cyberpunk 2077 would not have benefited from such an aura. And then, 8 million copies have been pre-ordered, and we can also count on purchases during the launch and the weeks that follow.
CD Projekt Red has a potential of at least 10 million copies sold as a minimum, and the game will surely make another hit in the Game of The Year edition. And then, since it’s a replayable game like The Witcher, players can always do it again on a more powerful machine in two years or play it on Stadia in the meantime.
