Laurentius and Alwel housing associations in Breda have been hit by a digital attack. Since last weekend, the websites of the two housing associations have largely been down. The companies are also not or hardly accessible by e-mail and telephone. It is the umpteenth cyber attack on a housing corporation in a short time, because Zayaz in Den Bosch is also the victim of hackers.
According to Alwel, there may have been a data breach, because the hackers could also access the personal details of the tenants. “To be on the safe side, we ask that you pay close attention to, for example, false emails, text messages or false telephone calls.”
“We don’t know exactly how it happened and what this means for you at the moment,” Alwel said in a press release. The company reported the cyber attack to the Dutch Data Protection Authority and immediately took action to secure the system and the data.
‘All systems are down, we are really out of touch’
Laurentius also confirmed on Wednesday that it was the victim of a cyber attack. “All systems are down,” said spokeswoman Ingrid van Loon. It is not clear whether money was demanded by the perpetrators. “We’re figuring out the extent of the damage, but we’re really out of touch.”
According to Van Loon, the office in Breda is open for visitors. In addition, the company has engaged a telephone backup that can only answer emergencies. Laurentius manages 8300 rental properties.
Bossche housing corporation also hacked
Housing corporation Zayaz in Den Bosch has also been flat since Sunday due to a digital attack. The personal data of the people from the 13,500 homes they rent out may have been leaked.
The cyber attack came to light when the corporation noticed that they were not easily reachable for customers. “Then we started calling each other and gradually found out that there was more going on.”
“We don’t know exactly what’s going on yet. We are currently investigating that,” said Lianne van Klaveren of Zayaz on Tuesday evening.
