“She bullied me terribly. Of course, only in a role, and so funny that I allowed myself to be bullied, and on the contrary, I supported it,” actor Petr Vančura told Novinkám about his experiences of filming the miniseries, in which he plays the right hand of the dean, played by Jitka Čvančarová.

“My character is a horrible careerist who would walk over corpses and is bullied by his dean. I think they see the possibility of some growth there. That if he endures, he will move higher and then give it back to everyone,” he described his role.

During Monday’s presentation of the new mini-series as part of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival at Dom ČT, he also mentioned that he is often offered roles of bullies. “I’m bullied by being offered bullied roles,” the actor added with exaggeration.

But he confided that he had experienced similar situations that could have been close to bullying outside of the characters he plays: “People had a tendency to do that, but there was always someone around who stood up for me. Or I didn’t even notice the bullying, and only in retrospect do I realize that it left a lot of scars in me.”
–
“Perhaps now, with the way the You don’t have to endure the initiative was created, one realizes how much I didn’t have to endure, but I endured because I didn’t notice that it could be bullying,” Vančura also mentioned the initiative of FAMU students, who spoke out against the frequent bullying that is supposed to be experienced at the Prague film school.

The current miniseries Background of Events represents the second project that Vančura shot with Jan Hřebejk. “It seems to me that he is really like a master and that he leaves room for freedom and liveliness, which amuses and fascinates me,” he added, adding that he would definitely work with him again on another project. Whether it would be again in the role of the bullied, but he has no idea.

Murder as a pretext
The story of the new miniseries revolves around teachers at a university in Olomouc. Their already strained relationship is disrupted by the murder of a student. However, according to director Jan Hřebejk, who is close to the detective genre, in this case the murder is more of a pretext that helps the plot unravel interpersonal relationships, and the whole series is supposed to be more of a humorous statement about contemporary men and women.

“The miniseries is a detective story only in appearance. It’s more like a satire. There are a lot of fun elements and it’s about how the status of men and women is changing nowadays,” the director told Novinkám.
–
“How men are losing ground, they don’t have that security, and vice versa, how the role of women is changing,” he added, adding that he was not aiming for a first-hand outline of the fact that “women have the upper hand and men are assholes.”
–
“I’m rather trying to find different types of coexistence and how it’s changing in today’s world, when slightly different demands are placed on us than years ago, and the possibilities are also different,” explained Hřebejk.

For example, the actress Martha Issová took on the role of a character who does not hide her homosexual orientation. “We show how her mother compares to it, how a colleague at work treats her, or how the child she is raising reacts to it,” the director explained, adding that he cast Issa’s mother and daughter in the miniseries.

His miniseries Background of Events will be shown by Czech Television in the fall.
