How long and for how many people is this?
“For two people for a week. But that’s just breakfast and lunch, because this week’s dinner is from Hello Fresh, a service that provides ingredients and recipes that you cook yourself.”
Isn’t Hello Fresh more expensive than sourcing the ingredients yourself?
“Well, if I didn’t get a discount.”
How do you get that discount?
“Either way, you get the first box you order from them at a discount. After that, you pay even less than full price. I cancel it regularly and then get an email a week later asking if I want to come back for a better rate .”
I used to buy fresh cheese, now we buy pre-packaged slices. Slightly less tasty, but cheaper.
This voucher is from Albert Heijn; not exactly the cheapest supermarket.
“I also have a few tricks there. I get a lot of airline miles every week. People can scan my premium bonus card via YouTube. Dozens of people do it every week. They get an extra discount and I get the airline miles. With two thousand airline miles you have 10 euro discount at the checkout.”
You also get a lot in the bonus yourself. Do you consciously buy mainly products that are in the bonus?
“Yes, and I’m also no stranger to the 35 percent sticker. I’m even more aware now that the prices are so high. Before, I always bought fresh cheese, now we buy the prepackaged slices. A little less tasty, but cheaper. “
Have you had to increase your weekly budget due to inflation?
“Not yet. It’s 140 euros and we’ll be fine. It just means less luxury food. We used to like making pasta with salmon. But the price of salmon is really skyrocketing, so let’s skip that. sugar. I don’t check all the labels to see if something contains sugar or not, but I no longer buy things like donuts and cakes. And we got rid of the candy jar.”
How come?
“Partly because of my health. But it’s also beneficial financially. Sugar stimulates my appetite. If I eat less sugar, I crave less food. And it’s so easy to eat a bag of M&Ms in one go So it saves real money.”
Do you have any other recommendations?
“Keep an eye out for all the deals. Cutting back on spending isn’t hard, but you need to take your time. For example, if I go shopping on Saturday and I know the laundry detergent will be on sale on Monday, I’ll go after my work back and then buy it.”
