Cultural institutions outside the capital have also joined. On Texel, people can visit Theo Maassen in theater De Toegift. In Zeeland they can get a ‘treatment’ in the CCXL Theater in Vlissingen.
Enforcement announced
In Amsterdam, the action could lead to a confrontation with the authorities. What should have been a playful action by the Kleine Komedie, Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw, among others, threatens to turn into a conflict between the city council and the organization, Kapsalon Theater.
Mayor Halsema announced last night to maintain. She points out that opening the theaters is not allowed, even if they offer haircuts. Following Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Nijmegen have also announced that they will enforce the corona rules.
Halsema’s letter, as well as the earlier announcement by the Security Council that it will be maintained, is against the sore leg of the organization. He does not understand that the catering industry could open its doors last weekend under the name of a protest action, but that cultural institutions can expect enforcers.
President Hubert Bruls of the Security Council has called on municipalities to act. “A short-term, demonstrative action may be possible, but simply reopening as if there were no rules that prohibit it is out of order. The cabinet must be very sharp about this,” said Bruls. He has banned the action in Nijmegen, where he is mayor.
‘No capacity to check everywhere’
Singer and podcast maker Ed Struijlaart is one of the organizers of the protest. He joined the initiators Sanne Wallis de Vries and Diederik Ebbinge out of anger at the position of the Security Council. “We think it’s very bland of Bruls. There has been no consultation with us at all.”
The organization has informed the cultural institutions that the action will continue, despite enforcement. He does not know whether all registered institutions will actually participate. “We cannot estimate what the situation is on the spot at the theaters today. We do not know how serious the municipalities are going to enforce.”
The municipality of Amsterdam does not want to say much about this either. “We are going to see where it is busy and what the situation is. That does not mean that we will visit all locations, because there is no capacity for that,” a spokesperson said. Institutions where it is too busy can receive a warning, the municipality says. If the action still continues, the setting can be forcibly closed.
