Cuts to Rome’s Metro C, opposition ready for battle

(ANSA) – ROME, 02 NOV – The budget cuts put an entire section of Rome’s new Metro C at risk, and the Democratic Party is preparing to fight in Parliament against an “absurd and incomprehensible” move towards a work “which has no political color”. And which the government, moreover, had already financed two years ago. The defunding was initially quantified at just 25 million for 2025, but the mayor Roberto Gualtieri, speaking with Il Messaggero, denounced a cut of as much as 425 million. According to opposition parliamentary sources, in fact, even 50 million would have been cut for each subsequent year of the three-year period covered by the measure, i.e. 2026 and 2027, bringing the hole to 125. Furthermore, it would emerge from the IT system of the Accounting Office State, the funds already ‘booked’ until 2032 by the law that financed the work would also be affected in a cascade. For a total shortfall, in fact, of approximately 425 million euros. With this less money, Gualtieri’s alarm, an entire future section of line C, the one from Piazzale Clodio to the Farnesina, would be skipped. And there would also be repercussions on the construction of the other routes. The mayor immediately contacted the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti and Palazzo Chigi: “I want to think that it was not a conscious choice and that the mistake will be corrected” he stated, because “normal political dialectics” is one thing, another ” strategic choices for the country and the capital”. Hence the mayor’s appeal to the government: “It is still possible to fix it”. In parallel, parliamentary work has already started.
