Cut Your Electricity Bill: How to Save Energy and Money with Your TV

There are certain devices that we use every day at home and that can represent a significant expense in electricity. There are clear examples, such as the refrigerator or the oven, but also others that may go unnoticed. In this article we are going to focus on the case of television. We are not going to talk about the consumption of having it on, since that may depend on the model and the time of use, but rather on other factors to take into account.

The idea is that you can save energy when you use television. Or even when you’re not using it. You will see that, just by changing some settings or making small changes, you can save on your electricity bill. The normal thing is that there is at least one television in every house, so practically everyone can save.

Avoid extra expenses with your TV

We can say that television can have additional expenses, beyond the time you have it on to watch movies, news or any program. It may go unnoticed, but there are several reasons why you could be using more electricity than necessary because of your TV.

A clear example is when you connect additional devices. It is a mistake to have speakers, a game console, a hard drive or a video player connected when we really don’t need it. All this will cause electricity consumption to increase. After all, they are devices connected to the TV and, at the same time, to electricity.

So, what can you do to save? Simply disconnect everything what you don’t need. If you are not going to use the game console, turn it off. If you are not going to play any DVDs, turn it off. Only with this, you will avoid that unnecessary expense that may even be present when you have the television off.

But we must also add the case of Stand By. Yes, the television is going to consume some electricity because of that red LED that always stays on. This is what is known as phantom consumption. Even if it is little, the fact of always being on will mean an additional expense. Our advice is to turn off the TV completely.

End phantom consumption

We can say that the phantom consumption It is something that is very present and that can represent an unnecessary expense. It is estimated that it can be around 10% of the total bill. Some examples are those we have mentioned, such as the devices that surround the television or the TV itself in Stand By. But there are many more examples.

Basically, anything you have connected to the power is going to be consuming energy. We are talking about chargers, idle appliances, lamps that you don’t usually use, etc. Everything, to a greater or lesser extent, is going to mean a added consumption and it will cause the bill to increase.

In short, as you can see, you can save energy simply by controlling the television better. Don’t make the mistake of leaving things plugged in if you don’t really need them. You should also not leave the TV itself on Stand By, since it will always consume some energy. If you have Internet throughout the house, you could even take advantage of home automation to consume less.
