Customs stopped the transfer of goods subject to sanctions to the border in 3,000 cases last year / Article

The past year was relevant in customs work with the control of sanctioned and excised goods, as well as counterfeit goods.

“More than last year, however, was the control of goods subject to sanctions. After Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the ninth package of sanctions has already been adopted, and customs is one of those services that actively engages and controls, preventing goods from entering Russia and Belarus, just like Russia and Belarus arrival of goods in the European Union,” Zakul said.

Regarding the transportation of goods subject to sanctions in 2022, a total of approximately 3,000 violations were reported. Basically, it affects the import of goods – mostly wood and metal products, as well as various devices – into the European Union.

When asked whether the transportation of such goods was intentional, Zakul said that when the next package of sanctions comes into effect, it could be the ignorance of businessmen. “But if we see that the same person is trying to change the product code for the second time, or, for example, we find two sets of documents in the car, one of which is not to Russia, but the other is to Russia, then we can talk about deliberate action ,” he explained.

In addition, there is a range of goods that are also prohibited for private individuals to transport across the border.

About 17 million contraband cigarettes were passed through the control of goods subject to excise duty, which is less than a year ago. However, the number of transfers has been higher, meaning that smaller amounts are often attempted.

Coal has been replaced by cast iron when hiding smuggled cigarettes. On the other hand, checking the cargo of boards revealed the biggest hiding place of cigarettes last year.

“We paid much more attention to control last year precisely because of the goods subject to sanctions. I admit – that’s why the situation has changed [attiecībā uz akcizētām precēm],” Zakul explained.

On the other hand, during the control of counterfeit goods, 27,000 such goods were detected, of which 20,000 were counterfeit toys.
