In three sacks in a container in the port of Gothenburg, the Swedish Customs’ staff found 150 kilos of the illegal drug cocaine. The drugs were found on April 15 this year and the seizure is one of the largest single cases of cocaine made by customs in Sweden.
The container was not sealed and it passed through Hamburg where port staff put a temporary seal on it for further transport to Sweden. In the port of Gothenburg, the customs officials suspected and when they examined the contents of the container, they found three jute bags with a total of 150 kilos of cocaine.
One of the bags contained cocaine with a purity of between 91 and 94 percent. The street value of the cocaine seizure is estimated at around SEK 120 million.
The Swedish Customs’ investigation shows that smugglers have tried to pick up the cocaine in the port of Hamburg. They probably failed when they were interrupted during the attempt.
– We suspect that the cocaine was actually intended for the drug market on the continent, but that something went wrong when the smugglers were to pick it up in the port of Hamburg. Instead, the cocaine remained in the container that was transported on to the port of Gothenburg where we found it, says Marcus Carlsson, deputy unit manager for Customs Crime West, in a press release.
There are currently none suspected of smuggling.
The drug was found in one of a total of six containers that were checked. Each container contained around 20 tons of granules, a product used in the manufacturing industry.
– We have no suspicions against the company that is the recipient of the granules, they have been very cooperative during the Swedish Customs’ investigation, says Marcus Carlsson.
