On the second day of the Lunar New Year, it is traditional to have a New Year meal, and the Cantonese are especially particular about this meal. Why do you choose to start the new year in the second year instead of the first year? What are the requirements and taboos of the Nanyue customs for the new year dinner, and what is the meaning of the new year dishes? A brief description is given below.
According to folklore, it is said that from the 30th to the first day of the new year, it is the time for the gods to rest. Therefore, traditionally the first day of the first day of the new year avoids killing and keeps fasting all day, thanks to the gods; but on the second day of the new year, you can eat a lot of meat, so it is reserved for the second day of the new year. Among them, Hong Kong people and Cantonese have the same traditions of celebrating the New Year.
1. Why do the New Year’s dinners be eaten at noon?
The New Year’s Eve is usually after the New Year’s rituals, but the time of the rituals is different, and it should be noted that the second day of the new year is not necessarily a good day. If it is the break of the year, it must be held at the auspicious hour. The auspicious hour is from 11 am to 1 pm, so the New Year’s meal is usually eaten at noon.
2. What are the dishes for the new year?
The traditional food to prepare for the New Year’s dinner is usually rich in fish and meat, such as fish, lettuce, roasted meat, and chicken, which symbolizes vigor and wealth; if it is a company’s New Year’s dinner, it is the boss and the employees to celebrate, so it is especially exquisite. There are nine kinds of dishes for the opening of the new year. Facai with oyster sauce, which means “making a fortune and good market,” is indispensable. I hope that business will be better and better in the new year.
3. What is a ruthless chicken?
Ruthless chickens generally appear in “Weihu (after the sacrificial dinner on December 16 of the lunar calendar)”, but they also occur in “Touhu”, the second day of the first lunar month. Traditionally, some companies will have dinner with their employees on this day, and the boss’s calculations are hidden between the big fish and the meat.
If the boss wants to take care of an employee on this day and tell him not to come back to work after the Chinese New Year, he will pick up a chicken and put it in the employee’s bowl, or point the chicken head at him when he is loading the chicken. At this time, employees will understand and know that they have to find another way out. This unspeakable chicken is therefore called the “relentless chicken.”
4. Are you married to your mother’s home for lunch in the second grade?
On the second day of the first lunar month, traditionally married daughters will bring their husbands and children back to their natal family for New Year greetings. When the daughter returns to her natal house, she must prepare a large bag of gift cakes and sweets, and everything in an even number. The mother will distribute it to neighbors, relatives and friends.
However, married women usually only have dinner at noon at their parents’ house, which is called “Eastern Day”. As the name suggests, it’s just lunch; traditionally the daughter-in-law has to take care of her husband’s food, so the daughter has to rush back to her husband’s home to prepare dinner after returning to her family’s New Year’s Eve dinner.
As for other customs on the second day of the new year, they include:
- Avoid washing clothes on the second day of the Lunar New Year: Water has a god of water, and the birthday of the god of water is on the first and second day of the new year, so do not wash your clothes these two days.
- You can’t take a nap during the day on the second day of the new year, otherwise you will be lazy throughout the year. The implication is that there are many guests who come to visit the house during the New Year. If you take a nap, it would be rude to people.
- On the second day of the Lunar New Year, avoid dumping sewage, garbage, and sweeping the floor: Do not engage in sweeping work during the New Year, because this will easily sweep away the wealth of your home.
- On the second day of the new year, avoid being taken out of your pocket by others, which means that money will be taken out of the whole year.
- On the second day of the Lunar New Year, avoid collecting debts from others: During the Chinese New Year, people who are asked for debts or asking for debts will be very unlucky throughout the year, so they are taboo to collect debts from others.
- On the second day of the Lunar New Year, when a daughter returns to her natal family, the gift of returning to the door should not be a single gift. Traditionally, it is considered that singularity is unlucky, and gifts brought back by the son-in-law must be in pairs.
