Region. Yesterday, Tuesday, a nationwide focus test in the main and ancillary construction trades took place, in which 76 emergency services from the main customs office in Braunschweig also took part. Customs officers at the locations of the financial control of undeclared work in Göttingen, Hildesheim and Braunschweig were on duty yesterday in the entire district of the main customs office and carried out checks on the basis of the law to combat undeclared work and illegal employment. The main customs office provides information about this in a press release.
The main customs office in Braunschweig interviewed a total of 344 people on the various construction sites about their employment during yesterday’s measure. In 25 cases, there were initial suspicions that required further investigations by customs officials. The follow-up investigations are extensive, but a concrete balance can only be drawn once they have been completed.
That’s the minimum wage
Most recently, the industry minimum wages in the roofing and electrical trades increased at the beginning of 2023 and are currently EUR 13.30 (wage group 1) or EUR 14.80 gross per hour (wage group 2) in the roofing trade. The minimum wage in the electrical trade is now EUR 13.40 gross per hour and since October last year the industry minimum wage in the scaffolding trade has also been increased and has been EUR 12.85 gross per hour since then. In addition, since August 2022, the gross minimum wage in the stonemasonry and stone carving trades has been EUR 13.35 per hour. For the other sectors of the construction industry, the minimum wage is currently EUR 12.00 gross per hour according to the Minimum Wage Act.
In addition to the industry-specific minimum wages, there are also other working conditions to be observed for the main construction trades as well as the roofers and scaffolding trades. This includes the obligation to pay overtime, surcharges for working at special times, hardship surcharges and special allowances, vacation pay and vacation pay, as well as the granting of vacation and the provision of accommodation. In the main construction trades and the scaffolding trade, employers also have to pay contributions to the industry’s own holiday fund. Another special feature in the construction industry is the ban on commercial temporary employment. Temporary workers may only be used in a few exceptional cases.
