Customs has found 33 pallets with a total of 9.9 million illegally imported cigarettes in a business building near Veenendaal. The cigarettes came from Lithuania and were found with the help of a specially trained dog.
According to customs, the importers would have had to pay EUR 2.4 million excise duty if the smoking goods had been imported as cigarettes. They evaded this by putting it on the label that it concerned cookies, reports RTV Utrecht.
A spokesman for the customs could not say how they found the cigarettes. It is also unclear whether any arrests have been made. In consultation with the FIOD tax investigation service, it has been decided to destroy the cigarettes.
