135 hairdressing salons and barber shops as well as the 340 employees working there were checked by customs in Cologne and the surrounding area on Tuesday. In addition to shops in Cologne (69), there are also companies in Bonn (7), Leverkusen (12), the Rhein-Sieg district (14), the Rhein-Erft district (19) and the Oberberg district (14) with 85 employees checked by the financial control for illegal work (FKS) of the main customs office in Cologne.

The controls are part of a nationwide focus test, said the main customs office in Cologne. In particular, the officials checked compliance with social security obligations, the illegal receipt of social benefits such as unemployment benefit I and II, the minimum working conditions and employer obligations under the Minimum Wage Act and the illegal employment of foreigners.

“The statutory minimum wage of 9.82 euros per hour also applies to hairdressers and bar shops,” said Jens Ahland, spokesman for the main customs office. There were first indications of violations in four companies. “The monitoring of compliance with the minimum wage often requires a close examination of the business documents. For us, the on-site inspection is always just the beginning of our work.”

The further balance: In six cases, investigations are started due to missing reports on social security. According to customs, there are four indications of the abuse of social benefits. Three workers were found without the required work permits.
