Customers want to see films from digital providers at the same time as they open in theaters

The cinema is one of the areas that suffered the most from the Corona crisis. Not only did the halls have to be closed, film studios have seized the opportunity to try out new business models that are pushing the cinema further into the background. Most recently, “Raya and the Last Dragon” caused trouble because Disney is also offering the animated film for sale at Disney + at the same time as the cinema release. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Netflix, Greg Peters, predicts that the cinema industry will have to comply with customer wishes.

Peters predicts concretelythat the exclusive time window for films in the cinema will continue to shrink or disappear: “This is what customers want,” is his simple summary. This trend cannot be resisted. More and more customers prefer to watch films directly in their home theater. That sounds logical to me, too, because in the meantime both the sizes and the picture quality of the televisions have improved enormously. This means that you no longer have to invest huge sums of money in order to build up an excellent film experience in your living room. The corona crisis has accelerated this trend.

The boundaries are also blurring with the content. “The Irishman” by Martin Scorsese, for example, started directly on Netflix and is in no way inferior to other films that were initially shown in theaters. However, Scorsese had only recently made a strong contribution to the cinema experience in an essay. However, it is becoming apparent that the cinema is facing changes that have been indicated over many decades and are now increasingly coming to the fore.

How are you Do you still like to go to the cinema or would you like to go there if it were possible again? Or would you be one of the first to prefer to watch a film directly via stream in the living room parallel to the cinema release?
