Customer sues Canon for disabling scan function when printer ink runs out – IT Pro – News

It’s true. I have such a fucking multifunctional Pixma.
It’s even worse: if 1 color is gone, the entire device already blocks with “refill ink cartridges”
Cannot print (not even black and white) and can no longer scan. Entire interface is locked.

I also have a Canon multi-functional here and it does not block.
If I print black with an almost empty color cartridge, it just works.
And if I’m going to print color with an almost empty color cartridge, I can still force it through.

All three Canon multifunctionals I have and have had work and worked that way.
But; those were the slightly more expensive models. For the first, ink ran out at some point – and available counterfeit/refill cartridges were worthless; really complete mess – but if I remember correctly I have used it as a scanner for a while even without having clicked cartridges in it.

I’m guessing Canon puts this kind of ink-lock antics on the cheaper models because that’s where the profit really has to come from the ink; and the printer hardware for the budget series is placed too far below cost price.

Should Which If that were the case, we would no longer be talking about a clumsy technical design, but about deliberately sewing consumers in order to arrive at a profitable revenue model. In such a case, the EU would also like to knock on Canon’s door, I think.
