Custom PlayStation 5 panel maker stops following Sony complaint

From PlayStation 5 has a striking design: the black game console has wavy, white plates on both sides. Sony recently showed those records easy to remove to be. A British company responded smartly to this.

Under the catchy name PlateStation.com, the company offered side panels in various colors for around 35 euros, from black to red, blue and chrome. The company received a complaint from Sony earlier this week that the name PlateStation was too similar to PlayStation. The maker of the panels reports this to his customers in a message.

The company changed its name to CustomizeMyPlates, but Sony doesn’t want to allow the panels themselves either. The panels infringe Sony’s intellectual property, the company claims.

Patent

CustomizeMyPlates said it had taken this into account, and thought it was right because Sony does not yet have a patent on the design of the side panels. That patent has been applied for.

Orders reversed

“Sony’s lawyers say they believe Sony’s intellectual property extends to the panels, and further sales and distribution of the panels in any country would end in court,” CustomizeMyPlates said. “We are very disappointed, but we have no choice.”

Customers who have already ordered a set of panels will receive their money back. The company now sells so-called skins for the PlayStation 5 for 22 euros, a kind of sticker sheets with which the entire game console can be wrapped. For 8.95 there are also skins to give the controller of the PS5 a different look.

From PlayStation 5 will be available in the Netherlands from November 19.
