The Inca Emperor strides through the streets of New York City while his entourage dances tirelessly, attracting the attention of passers-by, who stop to record video of the captivating scene. This performance was presented by 30 actors from Cusco, Peru as a promotional strategy to put Peru back in the news and in front of potential visitors in a positive light. The upcoming Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun), an ancient ritual dedicated to worshiping the sun god and asking him to lengthen the days, has been promoted in the Big Apple to put the most important festival on the Cusco calendar into the international limelight.
Inti Raymi honors the sun every June 24th and commemorates the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. Throughout June, Inca rituals are held to pay homage to the region’s land, sun and glacier-capped mountains. In addition to worshiping Christ, the Virgin Mary and numerous saints, many Peruvians also celebrate local and natural deities. These include the Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (Mountain Spirits), which include the sacred, glacier-capped peaks that protect the region’s villages. Andean festivals such as the Qoyllur Rit’i festival and the Catholic Corpus Christi festival lead to the most important ceremony, Inti Raymi.
This open invitation to international travelers to experience the 2023 Festival of the Sun is also a reminder of Peru’s uniqueness and specialness. PROMPERÚ, local authorities and the private sector have made intensive efforts to promote events and destinations in the short and medium term in order to develop and promote the tourism sector.
