Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban continues to block the planned EU oil embargo against Russia. It is “very unlikely that a comprehensive solution can be found before the special summit of the European Council on May 30th and 31st,” Orban wrote in a letter to EU Council President Charles Michel, which is available to the AFP news agency. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen does not expect a decision on this at the EU summit next week.
In a letter dated Monday, Orban warned that the sanctions proposed by the EU Commission would lead to “serious disruptions to the energy supply” in Hungary and a further massive increase in energy prices. At the same time, the Hungarian head of government called it “counterproductive” to discuss the sixth package of sanctions against Russia at the summit of heads of state and government as long as there was no consensus.
