“We have more infected people in Augsburg than ever before, never before has there been so many deaths in such a short period of time,” stated OB Weber.

Mayor Eva Weber, Health Advisor Reiner Erben, Prof. Dr. Axel Heller, Medical Director of Hospital Coordination in the Rescue Association, and Dr. Thomas Wibmer, deputy head of the health department, spoke on Thursday about the current corona situation in Augsburg, the effect of the protective measures, the work of the health department and the situation at the Augsburg University Hospital.
“Summer pandemic taken too lightly”
“We have more infected people in Augsburg than ever, never before have there been so many deaths in such a short period of time” and never before have so many corona patients been in the clinic, stated OB Weber. Why did Augsburg develop into Corona number 1 in Germany within a few days? “I dont know.” And the health department doesn’t know either. The current situation is more complex than at the beginning of the pandemic. “Perhaps we all together took the summer pandemic too lightly”. Weber and her crisis team want to draw their conclusions again in the coming week.
Coronavirus: Leisure behavior leads to spread
Wibmer explained that the infection process was still diffuse, there were no priorities. However, the middle age groups are still particularly often corona-positive. From October 9th, the “explosion-like increase” was noted. The first wave “now appears tiny” compared to the current second wave, said Wibmer, referring to the graphic of the corona cases over the entire period of the pandemic. Compared with the previous week, however, the number of cases has now decreased again. That is “a good sign”.
In schools, serial tests would tend to result in individual cases, according to Wibmer. It is more the leisure behavior of the students that contributes to the spread of the virus.
Number of patients in the clinics “dramatic”
The number of patients in the clinics, especially in the university hospital, is “dramatic,” said Heller, the medical director of hospital coordination for the rescue association for Augsburg city and the surrounding districts. Some patients have now even been flown to Würzburg, Ulm or Regensburg in order to create capacity.
However, we now know more about the treatment than in the first wave, says Heller.
Even if one had now reached the top of the corona case numbers, the situation in the hospital would continue to be dramatic for five weeks, because it would take until the patients recovered.
