Nourishment of Persistence’Touchdown’
We need to have conditions for our future generations
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), which was the first to explore Mars last year, also settled the probe Amal (hope in Arabic) on the 10th. The UAE, which is rich enough with petroleum resources alone, cited’to instill a spirit of challenge for future generations’ as one of the reasons for entering into burn exploration.
Curiosity and spirit of challenge were the key drivers of human progress. It is also in this context that the name of the exploration rover who went to Mars in 2012 prior to Persivirance was Curiocity. Of course, history does not come true only with curiosity and challenge. In order to make a dream a reality,’another engine’ is needed.
Last year, NASA’s Mars rover name contest received about 28,000 cases. Three of the nine names condensed as candidates imply that they endure adversity and endure. These are Endurance, Tenacity, and Persistence. Among them, the words of junior high school student Alexander Mather, who submitted the name Percivirence, and received the final choice, explains well what is’another engine’. “Curiocity, Insight (Insight), Spirit (Spirit), Opportunity (Opportunity). The names of former Mars exploration rovers are human capabilities. We always look for opportunities with curiosity. There is also the spirit and insight to explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond. But I missed something important. It is patience. Humanity has developed to be able to withstand any harsh situation. There will also be many difficulties on the way to Mars. But humanity will not give up. Humanity will always be patient and advance toward the future.” It means that a process of patience is required for curiosity and a spirit of challenge to lead to reality. The bigger the dream you want to achieve, the stronger your patience will increase. As if Percivirence flew 466,800 km for 204 days, entered Mars’ atmosphere, endured high temperatures of 1300 degrees Celsius, and finally landed on Mars’ surface. Unfortunately, however, not everyone is given the opportunity to be curious or persevering. For example, even a child who falls in love with space enough to dream of going to Mars every night cannot name a rover on NASA unless he is a high school student in the United States. How open are the targets to be challenged, and how much patience is supported for this is a big variable that separates the future of individuals and nations. When it comes to patience for a plus, it’s a blessing, not pain. However, in our society now, there are not a few youths who barely endure negative situations, who endure endurance rather than endurance. It is our urgent task to create conditions for future generations to shout’touchdown’ through challenges and patience for achievement.
Sarah Vint Yousef al-Amiri, the Minister of Advanced Science and Technology (34), who led the UAE’s Mars exploration project, told Dong-A Ilbo, “When I first imagined space exploration while looking at the Milky Way when I was 12 years old, it was only a dream in the UAE. “This has changed,” he said. “I launched a video probe, but my kids will be able to send a jupiter probe.”
