Introducing the curfew is a hot topic. Mayors are not keen on it, because it requires extra police efforts. Parties like D66, PVV and GL don’t see it that way either. The parties wonder whether the radical corona measure is proportional.
Today, part of the cabinet, which has been outgoing on Friday, met in the Catshuis. According to insiders, this part of the cabinet tends to introduce curfews more than before.
Effect
It is not clear whether the measure will really help. It was the intention that the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) would come up with further figures on this on Sunday, but it is unknown whether this was delivered.
Nevertheless, it was discussed in the Catshuis that – now that so many corona mutations are emerging – a curfew may be sensible. Taking this step now can prevent hospitals from being flooded, according to those involved. If curfew does not come into effect now, it is feared, the entire country may soon have to be locked.
Extra consideration
Because not the entire cabinet was present in the Catshuis, an extra crisis meeting with more ministers will be held on the issue on Monday. VVD, CDA, D66 and CU are going to consult their MPs about the curfew. On Monday evening, the cabinet will also discuss the matter with the security regions.
Several mayors have not been keen on before. Extra police efforts are needed for the curfew, they and the police also think. “That will be a difficult story, because the police are already on their toes,” says Sharon Dijksma, mayor of Utrecht and chairman of the Utrecht security region.
The idea is that the curfew starts at 8 p.m. and will be in effect until 4 a.m. Dogs may still be let out. Anyone who has to go out for work must be able to submit an employer’s statement.
In Amsterdam they are not waiting for a curfew.
