In Tuesday’s press conference, Rutte announced that the cabinet is keeping a curfew and closing non-essential stores for regions where the number of infections remains high. These are regions such as Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Twente. “If the figures remain above average, it is possible that there will be a local lockdown,” said Rutte. Those additional measures must be worked out within a week and a half.
In that case, citizens must stay indoors from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Vital professions should not suffer from curfews. “Of course a nurse must be able to walk on the street on the way to a night shift,” says Rutte, who does not want too many exceptions.
The Prime Minister is still cautious: “Let’s see if it is necessary first.”
Coalition party D66 indicates in the corona debate that it is ‘not yet convinced’ of the curfew. Besides the unpleasant connotation with the war that curfews have for some people, party leader Jetten wonders whether it can be enforced and whether the measure is proportional.
The Outbreak Management Team, which advises the cabinet in the fight against the pandemic, still expects a ‘positive effect’ from a national curfew.
