Curfew Imposed in Clamart Following Protests over Police Shooting in Nanterre

The Paris suburb of Clamart is now imposing a curfew as a result of large protests following Tuesday’s police shooting in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, where 17-year-old Nahel was killed.

The district justifies the curfew with the risk of disorder.

– Clamart is a safe and calm town, and we want it to remain that way, says a statement from the district authorities.

For now, the nocturnal curfew lasts until Sunday.

“Justice for Nahel”

On Thursday, Nahel’s mother led the demonstrations against the police in Paris.

Several thousand took part in a memorial march after the police killing. First on the train was the mother of the deceased boy, wearing a T-shirt with the inscription “justice for Nahel”.

– No justice, no peace! Everyone hates the police! shouted the crowd.

40,000 police officers will be deployed across the country to deal with any further riots, the country’s authorities announced on Thursday.

5,000 are deployed in Paris alone.

– Not a target for thugs

At first the demonstration was peaceful, but gradually the tension has increased between the demonstrators and the riot police. Outside an administration building, protesters threw things at the police – and received tear gas in return.

It is expected that more people will join the demonstration later in the evening.

At 9 p.m., the city’s buses and trams are parked to ensure the drivers’ safety.

– Our public transport is not a target for thugs and vandals! wrote Valerie Pecresse, president Paris region, in social media.

Arrested and charged

The 17-year-old who was shot was of North African origin, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting have led to great dissatisfaction among French youth.

The policeman who shot Nahel was arrested on Thursday and charged with the incident, reports AFP.

His lawyer told the French radio channel RTL France that the policeman believes he acted within the “framework of the law”.
