The meeting, which took place in Ampelonas, in the presence of the Regional Deputy Governor of Larissa Maria Galliou, the Mayor of Tyrnavos Stelios Tsikritsis and officials, focused on taking stock of the actions so far and planning the next steps to deal with the zoonotic disease.
Mr. Kouretas announced the successful completion of the surveillance zone measure, expressing his satisfaction with the performance of the measures taken. “We mobilized immediately, taking measures which were indeed strict but necessary. We did it fearing the diaspora and based on the results we feel completely justified,” he said.
In his report, the Regional Governor highlighted the immediate mobilization of the Regional services and veterinarians, who managed to trace over 360,000 animals, both symptomatic and asymptomatic. “About 14,000 animals were killed, a small number in proportion to the size of the livestock in the area and the severity of the disease,” he added, while stressing that tracking will continue daily until the end of August.
Mr. Kouretas also expressed his gratitude to the breeders for their cooperation and trust in the Region of Thessaly. “Thank you for listening to our services, complying with the instructions and following the measures, no matter how harsh they may seem at first. They proved necessary,” he said.
The Deputy Governor of Larissa, Maria Galliou, pointed out the importance of continuing the joint effort to eradicate the plague. “If we continue the joint effort, we with all the means we have in the field and you with honesty and trust, we will succeed,” he stressed.
The Mayor of Tyrnavos, Stelios Tsikritsis, praised the immediate reflexes of the Regional Authority and the success of the operation to contain the disease. “The threat was contained thanks to the great operation of the District,” he noted.
Finally, the Regional Governor of Thessaly committed himself to the search and punishment of those responsible for the transmission of the plague in the region. “I give you my word, that the culprits will be sought. At the right time though. Now is the time of the battle…,” he said closing the meeting.
