Satirical comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm wrapped up its 12-season run this past Sunday with a finale that cleverly referenced highlights from its impressive television legacy.

The HBO series centers around Larry David, playing an exaggerated version of himself, a semi-retired television writer and producer based in Los Angeles.

Empire, in their review of the final season, hailed the comedy as an all-time classic in the TV comedy hall of fame.

While the AV Club criticized the final episode as being devoid of much surprise, the legacy of Curb Your Enthusiasm remains unquestionable.

Initially concluding in 2011, the show was rebooted after a six-year hiatus, totaling an impressive 120 episodes.

Curb, which premiered as a regular series in 2000 after its initial release as a special in 1999, continuously pushed boundaries as it evolved over the course of two decades, according to Variety’s Daniel D’Addario.

In its unique improvisational style, the show’s dialogue is largely improvised by the actors while maintaining a basic plot structure written by David.

The final season’s overarching story line paralleled Larry’s ongoing battle with Georgia election laws. The season finale, set in a courtroom, provided a platform for various characters from past seasons to appear as witnesses, reminiscent of popular storylines.

Some critics, like Empire’s Boyd Hilton, believed that the most entertaining scenes of the season diverged from the show’s central plot. Hilton commended David’s ability to extract humor from poignant moments showcasing his impotent frustration.

The series finale applauded David’s ability to address and poke fun at the criticism surrounding the end of Seinfeld, a show he co-created, with a meta-conversation between Larry and Leon (JB Smoove).

With appearances from celebrities, news anchors, and guest stars, the finale also paid tribute to Seinfeld by incorporating multiple references to the iconic TV comedy.

Curb Your Enthusiasm has garnered critical acclaim throughout its run, having earned two Emmys and a Golden Globe.

Reviewing the finale, CNN’s Brian Lowry praised David for confidently writing his show’s conclusion while also acknowledging one of Seinfeld’s minor flaws, concluding that the result of the finale was indeed more than pretty good.

Although the finale was fan-service to an extent, pulling from past seasons to create a nostalgic conclusion, critics like the AV Club believed that the expected nature of the finale minimized its impact and overall surprise.

Despite the unique decline of a specific Jewish humor style, Curb Your Enthusiasm retains its comedic charm, even amidst the turmoil of recent times, emphasizing the importance of timing in both comedy and life.
