Curaçao has had to deal with a power outage for hours that affected the entire island. Around 9 p.m. local time, energy company Aqualectra reported that large parts of the island had electricity again. The power outage was due to a fault in one of the main cables, the company says.
Due to the recent heat, Aqualectra is having difficulty with the high demand for electricity. This is mainly because companies and households are turning on the air conditioners en masse. Curaçao has been experiencing extreme heat for several days, with temperatures rising to 37 degrees Celsius. For this reason, students have been sent home at noon for some time now.
The Curaçao Medical Center hospital had switched to generators, local media report. Those generators kicked in right away. To save electricity, electricity was only used in wards with patients.
The airport also remained open and planes could still land and take off. The airport also uses generators. As a result, the air conditioner went out.
According to it Antillean newspaper traffic jams arose in several places on the island as many people left work after the power outage. This led to some problems, especially at busy intersections where the traffic lights did not work.
