Cupra Born: A Sporty and Travel-Friendly Electric Car with a Surprising Feature

The Cupra Born is the sporty brother of the Volkswagen ID.3, but with the large 77 kWh battery it also makes a good traveling companion. But why is there a hole in the back seat?

We drive the Born in the Adrenaline version on the 19-inch wheels. These are the smallest for the car with the 77 kWh battery pack.

Cupra Born 77 kWh, a good travel car?

A Cupra is sportier than an ID.3, but not a rock-solid driver’s car. Even with around 120 kilograms of extra weight from the battery pack, the car offers dynamic driving characteristics, but is also comfortable on long distances. The 231 hp engine on the rear axle provides more than enough power, but it is not much smoother than the 204 hp version. However, that version does not come with the large battery pack.

Taking a long journey with the Cupra Born is doable, although the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel in combination with an unclear navigation system and complicated menu structure sometimes make you struggle with the technology. Using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can partly eliminate these annoyances. Once set, the adaptive cruise control works well and the Born anticipates traffic without any problems.

Only four people?

It is striking that the Cupra Born with a 77 kWh battery pack can only take four people on board. The back seat has a hole in the middle, because the car with five people exceeds the maximum permitted mass, in this case 2,300 kilograms.

The 77 kWh Born always has a ski hatch and, with a range of up to 550 kilometers and 170 kW of fast charging capacity, it is really suitable for winter sports. You do not lose any luggage space compared to the version with the smaller battery pack.

Somewhat sporty?

Although the Cupra Born is easy to position and the steering feel is sharper than with an ID.3, the ESP cannot be turned off completely in this version either. If there is any loss of traction, the car is corrected electronically.

Volkswagen renews its most important model: the Tiguan

However, this does not alter the fact that you can certainly experience driving pleasure in the Born, although it will never be a hot hatchback.

77 kWh Cupra Born much more expensive?

The first two equipment levels of the Cupra Born are always supplied with the 58 kWh battery pack. Only the Adrenaline and Performance are available with the large battery. The price tag is 49,990 euros and 52,990 euros, which is 6,000 euros more than you pay for the same versions with the smaller battery pack. Prices have just been reduced.

You can drive this sports car with an AOW benefit
