They are the giants in the DFB Cup: Women’s Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg can extend two sensational series when it comes to the quarter-finals against Werder Bremen on Saturday (2 p.m.). Because the Wolfsburg women have not known defeats for years – and the team that last defeated them no longer exists in this form today. Nevertheless, there is danger lurking. Probably not in this round, but Bayern Munich is waiting in the semifinals …

“Because they don’t know how it will turn out.” Sepp Herberger, coach of the world championship team from 1954, answered this once when asked why spectators go to his soccer game. This answer has been refuted by the VfL Wolfsburg players in the DFB Cup for 2367 days when the quarter-final home game against Werder Bremen begins. What began with a 5-1 away win at Holstein Kiel on September 27, 2014, should not end on Saturday. With a positive side effect. VfL coach Stephan Lerch: “It is important that we can go into the next few weeks with a good feeling and we can get that if we ideally win against Bremen to zero and if we play a good game.” It would be the 33rd victory in a DFB Cup game in a row.

The last defeat in the German Cup competition was conceded by Wolfsburg against a club that no longer exists today: 1. FFC Frankfurt, which merged with Eintracht Frankfurt before the current season, fought VfL on November 16 on the way to winning the cup 2013 in Rödelheim 1-0 down. Kerstin Garefrekes scored in the 54th minute for the final score. Then as now in the VfL jersey on the pitch: Almuth Schult, Lena Goeßling, Zsanett Jakabfi and Alexandra Popp. But her memory of a defeat in the DFB Cup is likely to have faded by now.
It has followed 32 victories in a row to date, the record of 1. FFC Frankfurt (29 victories) has long been broken. The start of the successful streak started a bit bumpy on September 27, 2014. Regionalligist Kiel even took the lead, held 1: 1 until the break, before VfL 5: 1 on the way to their first DFB Cup title won. As a result, Wolfsburg decided only five times a duel not in 90 minutes in the course of the series. But they couldn’t be beaten in extra time (three wins) and on penalties (two wins), scoring 144: 16 goals (not counting penalties).
The biggest win came on September 26th, 2015 with a 19-0 win at DJK-VfL Billerbeck. This is not a cup record, however, as 1. FFC Frankfurt won 20-0 at Karlsruher SC on September 23, 2001.
If Werder, which VfL have not yet met in this cup series, is visiting on Saturday, Wolfsburg can expand another, even longer series: The Wolfsburg last lost a cup home game over ten (!) Years ago on October 24, 2010 with 1: 5. That was 3801 days ago on Saturday! And the former winner – like the last VfL conqueror 1. FFC Frankfurt – no longer exists in its original form. With the beginning of the bankruptcy on January 1, 2014, FCR 2001 Duisburg now plays in the women’s football department of MSV Duisburg.
Not only the series, but also the current form of course make Wolfsburg the favorites against Werder. Nevertheless, the series in the current cup competition is more at risk than it has been for a long time. Because in the semifinals, FC Bayern is waiting for VfL. The Munich team prevailed 2-1 at 1899 Hoffenheim on Friday evening, making them the first semi-finalist. The team of coach Jens Scheuer is the measure of all things so far this season, has not yet given a point in the league and that with a goal difference of 62: 3 (VfL: 49:11).
But on Saturday only the north duel against Bremen and the possible 33rd victory in a cup game in a row count.
