150,000 euros – this is the amount the sports court of the German Football Association imposed on FC Bayern Munich as a fine, as the DFB announced on November 11, 2024. The reason for this measure is the misconduct of Bayern fans at the DFB Cup game on August 16, 2024 between Bayern and the second division team SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball. Some supporters of the record champions burned down several fireworks batteries and other pyrotechnic items in the 46th minute of the game in Ulm’s Danube Stadium – the Munich block briefly looked like a sea of flames.
As can be seen from the sports court’s announcement, the DFB control committee had requested a fine totaling 169,000 euros for this unsportsmanlike behavior. Bayern Munich AG did not agree to this – according to them, the Munich fans did not set off as many fireworks as stated by the control committee. In addition, the club has taken all possible preventive measures to prevent the use of pyrotechnics. However, these control options were limited in the away game in Ulm’s Donaustadion.
Images and video recordings show the extent of the fireworks
The sports court only followed these objections to a limited extent and relied on reports from the referee and DFB power delegate. It also used numerous images and video recordings of the event in order to be able to reasonably estimate the number of Bengal fires, launchers and other pyrotechnic items. Flashes of fire and sparks sometimes landed in uncontrolled paths in the block and interior of the stadium: a “massive and dangerous misconduct that goes beyond the “usual” incidents in the fan curves”.
However, since there was no damage or injuries, the club had demonstrably taken preventative measures and Munich supporters had not recently attracted attention with such actions, the sports court slightly reduced the amount of money requested by the control committee.
According to the sports court’s order, FC Bayern Munich should invest a third of the estimated 150,000 euros in security and violence prevention measures.
In the first round of the DFB Cup, second division promoted SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball clearly lost 4-0 to FC Bayern Munich. The Donaustadion was sold out with 17,400 spectators.
