It is slowly getting interesting, financially interesting for Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup. Sports director Frank Baumann recently had to look at it so soberly. Because the clammy Bremer have hardly a better chance this year than to flush additional money into the empty coffers via the cup rounds.
And for it to be really worth it, you have to survive a few laps, and Werder has done that this season. With the quarter-finals it will actually be lucrative for the Bremen team: they have already collected 2.5 million euros – Werder received a good million euros up to the round of 16, for the round of the last eight there was now 1.4 million euros on top.
Cup victory would almost bring Werder the Selke transfer fee
Money that the indebted Bundesliga team urgently needs, it would be all the more important on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. that circumnavigator Boris Herrmann would have a lucky hand for Werder as a losfee. Because if Bremen should move into the semi-finals, the Kohfeldt-Elf would get an additional bonus of 2.8 million euros.
And should the dream of the club’s seventh cup victory finally come true on May 13th, Werder would have earned a total of ten million euros – about as much as Baumann had to transfer to Hertha BSC in the summer for Davie Selke. Either way, the green-whites will certainly have enough incentive this year to keep playing in the trophy.
I actually dream that of winning the cup every year, dreaming is allowed. But just because Bayern Munich were eliminated, it hasn’t gotten a bit easier.
