The Challenge League club Stade Nyonnais will play against FC Basel in the round of 32 of the Swiss Cup for the third time in the club’s history. Thun and Grasshoppers will face off in a new edition of this year’s promotion/relegation play-off. This was the result of the draw on Sunday evening.
At the end of May, Grasshoppers secured their place in the league in the play-off against promotion hopefuls Thun thanks to a late goal from Asumah Abubakar to make it 2-1 in the second leg. The first leg ended 1-1. Stade Nyonnais knocked FCB out of the tournament in the round of 32 at the beginning of 1999 with a 4-2 penalty shootout. The two Basel misses were current FC Luzern coach Mario Frick and Attila Sahin. Almost nine years later, Basel took revenge with a 2-0 win in the quarter-finals.
Defending champions Servette (Schaffhausen), Winterthur (Wil) and Luzern (Aarau) also have to assert themselves against clubs from the Challenge League. Emmen and Gambarogno-Contone, the last two remaining clubs from the 2nd interregional league, can compete with Yverdon and Bellinzona.
The games will take place from September 13th to 15th.
