Leverkusen – VfL Wolfsburg and SGS Essen will contest the DFB Cup final for women on July 4th (4.45 p.m. / ARD) in Cologne.
Cup defender Wolfsburg, who is now reaching for the trophy for the sixth time in a row, beat Arminia Bielefeld 5: 0 (2: 0) at the bottom of the second division. With Essen also the second favorite moved into the final with a 3-1 (2-0) at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. On June 13, the two teams will already meet in the fight for Bundesliga points in Essen.
For Essen, Ramona met Petzelberger after only three minutes. Anja Feldkamp (42.) used another big chance of the guests for the supposed preliminary decision before the break. After the change of sides, however, SGS left Bayer the initiative and had to accept the connection after a handball by Martina Hegering and the resulting penalty by Merle Barth (56th). From then on, Leverkusen had some top-class chances, but didn’t use them. Lea Schüller scored the decisive 3-1 in the third minute of added time. Essen is in the final for the second time after 2014. At that time, the 1st FFC Frankfurt lost 0-3.
Wolfsburg’s trainer Stephan Lerch spared his regulars, mostly allowing them to act only for half time and thus also giving supplementary players a chance to play. Pernille Harder converted a penalty for the lead after 16 minutes. Pia-Sophie Wolter (38.), twice Claudia Neto (52., 81.) and Sara Gunnarsdóttir (87.) ensured the favorites’ further hits. Bielefeld didn’t stand a chance and could thank his strong goalkeeper Joyce Lee Braun, who kept the defeat in check with numerous strong saves.
