The Bundesliga soccer team 1. FC Union Berlin and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim surprisingly failed in the second round of the DFB Cup because of the second division.
The Berliners lost 2: 3 (1: 3) against SC Paderborn. For Hoffenheim it was the end of the line after a 6: 7 in the penalty thriller (2: 2, 2: 2, 1: 1) against SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
On the other hand, the troubled FC Schalke 04 after a 3-1 (1-0) win against the regional league SSV Ulm as well as Borussia Dortmund after a lackluster 2-0 (1-0) at Eintracht Braunschweig.
RB Leipzig also made it into the round of the best 16 teams with a 3-0 (1-0) win at league rivals FC Augsburg. Borussia Mönchengladbach easily won 5-0 (3-0) against the fourth division in Elversberg. 1. FC Köln managed to advance with a 1-0 (1-0) win against VfL Osnabrück. SV Darmstadt 98 ended the hopes of third division leaders Dynamo Dresden with a 3-0 (1-0) score.
For Union, the end came quite unexpectedly after such strong performances in the league. Sven Michel scored twice for the guests (3rd / 36th), Dennis Srbeny (31st) was also successful. For the Berliners, the goals by Grischa Prömel (6th) and Uwe Hünemeier (57th / own goal) were too few.
Hoffenheim also disappointed. Sebastian Ernst (21st minute) and Marco Meyerhöfer (46th) scored the goals for Fürth in regular time. Paul Seguin could have made the decision from the penalty spot (90 + 4), but missed. For TSG, despite goals from Andrej Kramaric (13th) and Kevin Akpoguma (49th), it was a bitter damper because Fürth had the better nerves in the end.
For Schalke, who, like in the disappointing 1-0 defeat of Arminia Bielefeld in the league, were again looked after by interim coach Huub Stevens, international Suat Serdar set the course with his opening goal in the 27th minute. The Royal Blues did not perform well again, but with Benito Raman’s brace in the 51st and 63rd minutes the preliminary decision had been made. Ulms Johannes Reichert scored the deserved consolation goal with a penalty margin (82nd).
In Augsburg, the guests got off to a strong start and took an early lead through Willi Orban’s header (11th). Even after that, the Leipzig team was the better team for a long time, Yussuf Poulsen (75th) and Angelino (82nd) made everything clear.
An early goal by Mats Hummels (12th) and a goal by Jadon Sancho in stoppage time were enough for BVB to win the lackluster mandatory victory in Braunschweig. The Cologne team are also in the round of 16. Anthony Modeste’s goal (45 + 1) was enough for the home side against the brave second division club from Osnabrück. The Gladbachers did not let anything burn, who were already clearly leading in Elversberg at the break.
The cup round of 16 will be played on February 2nd and 3rd. The draw for the next round will take place on January 3rd as part of the ARD “Sportschau”. Losfee is then the former ski jumper Sven Hannawald.
