CUNY cancels $ 125 million of debt from its students

Juvanie Piquant and thousands of other students from the city’s university system (CUNY) welcomed the news of the cancellation of student debts with joy.

And it is that this economic aid extends to entire families that will be able to leave the accumulated debts at zero after several semesters.

“My parents work very hard. We all deserve this help. Not only are they taking care of our education, they are also taking care of each member of our family. This changes the lives of many people, it helps restore dreams and make CUNY come back stronger,” says Piquant.

And it is already official that 50,000 students throughout the CUNY system will be able to benefit from the federal funds that the university has received from the stimulus program.

Félix Matos Rodríguez, CUNY Chancellor, referred to this initiative: “It is the largest debt cancellation program in the entire nation.”

Students who have been receiving financial aid and also those who did not receive it but who still owe money to the educational institution may receive this aid

Foreign Minister Rodríguez details which periods are included: “Four semesters: the spring of 2020, when the pandemic scared us for the first time; the summer of 2020, the fall of 2020 and the spring of 2021. If your debt is from a previous semester to those, it does not qualify for this program. “

For students who are out of debt, but were barely able to pay for their semesters during the pandemic, there will also be relief.

“And all the students who had difficulty but paid their tuition, we are inviting them to come back next semester and we are going to give them a contribution of $ 200 so that they can continue their studies,” explained Rodríguez.

The Chancellor also announced that there is a second part of this stimulus program for students who enroll this fall and next spring.

This package includes aid for undocumented immigrants who have dropped out of school and want to return.
