Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) will begin manufacturing electrolysers in the United States, underscoring the company’s continued commitment to developing the country’s green hydrogen economy. The electrolyser will be manufactured in Fridley, Minnesota, starting at 500 megawatts (MW) of production capacity per year, expandable to 1 gigawatt (GW) in the future.

Cummins plans to dedicate 89,000 square feet of its existing Friedley facility to manufacturing the electrolyser. The facility will initially manufacture the HyLYZER®-500 and HyLYZER®-5000 proton exchange membrane electrolyser (PEM) here, with the potential to manufacture other electrolytic products in the future.
This product range can meet energy needs from 1.25MW to over 200MW for small and large scale hydrogen generation projects.
The electrolyser separates water into oxygen and hydrogen. When the electrolyzer system is powered by renewable electricity, such as solar, wind or hydro, the hydrogen it produces is “green” and carbon-free.
This green hydrogen can be stored as a compressed gas or liquid and used as a clean, dense energy source to help remove carbon from a variety of difficult-to-manage sectors, such as heavy transportation and industrial processes.
This new manufacturing space in Fridley adds to Cummins’ growing global development and manufacturing of electrolysers. The company recently announced the expansion of PEM electrolyzer manufacturing capacity at its Belgium plant to 1 GW and added space at its Mississauga, Canada site.
Cummins is also building two new electrolyser plants in Spain and China, each with a production capacity of 500 MW and expandable to 1 GW.
