Cummings defends Brexit, claims Turkey will join the EU and continues to use made-up figures | Politics | news

Former Vote Leave campaign manager said it was clear that anti-Brexit activists had tried to hide Ankara’s desire to join the group of European nations ahead of the EU referendum. The possibility fueled fears among the UK public as they prepared to vote. Many feared an enormous influx of immigrants if Turkey were to join the bloc.

In his latest blog post, Mr. Cummings wrote, “Fact: Turkey has been joining for decades.

“It was the official government policy of Turkey and other countries to join as soon as possible.

“‘Fix the road from Ankara to London,’ said Cameron.”

He was referring to the controversial remarks made by former Prime Minister David Cameron before the EU referendum in June 2016.

The Tory leader has been accused of “appeasing” Turkey for supporting efforts to bring the nation into its lap.

As early as 2005, shortly after taking office, he said: “We very much welcome the accession talks with Turkey and Croatia.”

And he complained that progress in joining the two countries into the trading bloc was “desperately slow”.

The following year he said the UK supports “enlargement of the EU, so we welcome the accession talks with Turkey”.

Former Chancellor George Osborne concluded that the economy would shrink by six percent by 2030 if the country became independent from Brussels.

Mr. Cummings wrote: “This is an example of an ‘invented character’.”

He added, “Most campaigns do what Remain did and just make up junk.

“We were more successful than most campaigns because we used facts instead of just making things up.

“And SW1 freaks out in part because many deep down know that this is true.”

Mr Cummings continues to be vocal on political issues after leaving his top role on Downing Street.

In an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, he claimed he spoke with allies about how Mr Johnson could be ousted as Prime Minister just days after winning the general election in December 2019.

He said: “We have already said that by summer we will either all be gone or we will try to get rid of him and get someone else to be Prime Minister.

“He has no plan, he doesn’t know how to become prime minister, and we only brought him in because we had a specific problem to solve, not because he was the right person to run the country.”
