Cumbre Vieja: Nine professional soccer fields could be built in the strip formed by the lava of the Palmero volcano | Radio Club Tenerife

The latest data provided by the Copernicus system already speak of 338 hectares devastated by lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano. To get an idea of how much it occupies, if we compare it with the dimensions of a professional soccer field (approximately one hectare), we would be in front of 338 professional enclosures that have been washed away.

Roads

So far, the lava from the volcano has destroyed just over 27 kilometers of roads. If we measured this figure in a straight line, we could be facing the disappearance of a route, for example, between the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the municipality of El Sauzal or from the Parque de Santa Catalina (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ) to Gran Canaria Airport.

Fajana formed in the sea

Eleven days after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, the lava reached the sea. The wash has come to form a delta or fajana (extension of land) that, according to the latest calculations, occupies about 84,000 square meters. On this portion of land reclaimed from the ocean, almost nine professional soccer fields could be built.

Lava ejected

Since last Sunday, September 19, until today, the La Palma volcano has expelled some 46 million cubic meters of magma; a figure higher than that spilled by the Teneguía (1971) during almost a month of eruption. With this amount it would be used to fill 13,629 Olympic swimming pools.
