In May and June 2023, sporting life experienced serious moments, while cultural life was at its zenith with a reward. Thus, in May, in Lombez, Martine and Ramon Ruiz-Taust, from Save Détente, after being celebrated by members of the gymnastics club, left Val de Save to settle in Reims. Over the past four years, the 110 members of Save Détente and the facilitators had established cordial ties with their president and the secretary. Ramon Ruiz-Taust succeeded Monique Lepain, the founder of the club. From now on, the new president of the club is Patrick Toribio. The office he set up is very present in the life of the club.
In June, the major event in Lombez was the prize won by the municipality during the competition “The Greatest Museum of France” supported by the Safeguarding of French Art and Allianz France: this prize was awarded for the “Mise au tomb”, a set of 7 polychrome statues from the 15th century discovered in 2020 behind the Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel of the cathedral where they had been walled up in the 19th century. The 7 statues from the 15th century therefore won the prize of 8,000 euros given to the mayor and the deputy for culture who had defended the project during a ceremony. The municipality spends between 80,000 and 100,000 euros each year on the maintenance of the cathedral. The “Entombment” will be installed around the “Recumbent Christ”, already present at the entrance to the cathedral.
In June, a death mourned the town of Samatan and more particularly the tennis club. Gilles Fenieys, 51, sports director of the Tennis Club, succumbs to illness. Very attached to his club, he knew how to thrill with the bounce of the little yellow ball. He set about a mission: to develop the influence of the club. The summer tournaments were great moments with, after the matches, jumping into the Save. He also had an impact on the English college of Sauveterre where he taught history, religions and tennis.
