For thriller fans Pickelhauben, whiskers and morbid Vienna in the 19th century. It will be historical, it will be dark, even creepy, it will go into the depths of the human soul, accompanied by the sometimes difficult to understand Austrian dialect. The series “Freud” by director Marvin Kren tells in a mixture of biopic and crime thriller the beginnings of the young Sigmund Freund in Vienna in 1886. The young neurologist Sigmund Freud, played by Robert Finster, strives for recognition for his theories of the subconscious but laughed at by the medical establishment for his theories. The father of psychoanalysis chases a serial killer alongside medium Fleur Salomé (Ella Rumpf) and war veteran Alfred Kiss (Georg Friedrich). The murder case is fictional, Freud’s theories are not deepened, but a tricky, dark and entertaining intrigue story develops, reminiscent of “Babylon Berlin” in style. The eight-part series was shown on Netflix in 2020 and can now be found in the ZDF media library until December 22nd. Link: www.zdf.de/serien/freud
