Culture in New York despite the Corona crisis: park comedy and truck concerts

Stand-up comedy in the park and classical concerts via pick-up truck: During the Corona crisis, cultural organizers in New York came up with a lot of new ideas.

Because the famous comedy clubs in the metropolis have been closed since March, the operators of the “Stand Up NY” club, for example, have recently started organizing appearances in various New York parks. There are now around 40 shows a week, for example in Central Park in Manhattan or in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and access works on a donation basis.

The New York Philharmonic, whose concert hall has also been closed since March and at least until the end of the year, have rented a pick-up truck and are holding so-called “pull-up concerts”. A small group of musicians and singers drives the truck through the city and gives spontaneous concerts in different places.

The metropolis was one of the epicentres of the coronavirus pandemic in spring. The infection rate is now stable at a low level. Nevertheless, many cultural institutions are still closed and some – such as the theaters on Broadway or the Metropolitan Opera – have already announced that they will no longer open this year.
