Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – The Frankfurt Opera is planning live performances in front of an audience again in the coming season in view of the falling corona numbers. “Everyone is full of anticipation – and well prepared,” said Artistic Director Bernd Loebe (68) on Tuesday in Frankfurt at the presentation of the season preview. The house is again relying on the tried and tested mix of famous operas and musical rarities.

Seldom performed works include “L’italiana in Londra” by Domenico Cimarosa, “Masquerade” by Carl Nielsen and “The Night Before Christmas” by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow. The repertoire includes “Madama Butterfly” by Giacomo Puccini and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Benjamin Britten. Classics such as “Norma” by Vincenzo Bellini, Richard Strauss’ “Salome” and Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin” will be resumed.

“We are only there because we are there for others. Now it is a matter of tightening the invisible bond to the audience again,” said Loebe. A total of eleven premieres are planned for the 2021/22 season, including some that were originally planned for the current season. There are also 15 revivals and eight recitals. The opera “Amadigi” by Georg Friedrich Händel is planned as the first premiere on September 25th.

According to the information, who sings or conducts in the individual performances is not yet clear at all performances due to the planning uncertainties caused by the pandemic. These will be decided in the coming weeks. Loebe has been artistic director in Frankfurt since the 2002/2003 season. In January, his contract was prematurely extended to 2028.
