The Ministry of Culture and Youth invites you to enjoy the many cultural activities that will be offered this weekend. The program includes activities in celebration of Calypso; In addition, classical music, theatrical presentations, and even a concert that combines “iron” music with pop, jazz and funk.

The options are many and for all tastes. Know the detail below:

“As it was in the beginning”: theatrical trilogy seeks to reflect on diversity

The Costa Rican actor Andy Gamboa will present this weekend, at the Vargas Calvo Theater, located behind the National Theater of Costa Rica (TNCR), a trilogy made up of the works: “Memoria de Pichón”, “Autopsia de una Sirena” and ” Lord of Lords”; which are directed and acted by himself, through which he seeks to reflect on the theme of diversity.

Each day a different work will be presented: on Thursday, May 25, 8 pm, “Memoria de Pichón”; Friday May 26 and Saturday May 27, 8 pm, “Autopsy of a Mermaid”; and to close the cycle, on Sunday, May 28, at 8 pm, “Lord of Lords”. All performances will have interpretation at LESCO and are aimed at people over 18 years of age.

Tickets cost ₡8,000 colones general and ₡8,500 colones for students with a card and senior citizens. They can be purchased on the site www.teatronacional.go.cr or at the TNCR physical ticket office.

Cahuita will celebrate Calypso with different musical presentations

National Calypso Day is celebrated every May 7 in honor of the birth of Walter Ferguson Byfield. This year, from Friday May 26 to Sunday May 28, starting at 2 pm, at Playa Negra and Parque Alfredo Gonzalez Floresin Cahuita, Limón, the public will be able to enjoy different activities such as: workshops and musical presentations in celebration of Calypso.

The varied cultural agenda will present different musical and artistic groups such as: SINEM from Guácimo, Siquirres and Limón; Calypsonians musical groups such as Kawe Calipso, Zapata y su Caribbean Calypso, New Revelation, Sonoridades del caribe, Junior y su Calypso, Cantoamérica, Calypso Family, Shanty y su Calypso, Di Gud Frendz, Wolaba Caribe Danza, Escuela de Música Caribeña Tortuguero, Playing for Change, Cahuita Calypso Youth, Profetas.com, Tropical Calypso Music, and the Band of Lemon Concerts.

The official inauguration will be on May 26, at 7 pm, in Playa Negra Cahuita. All activities are free and open to the public. Activities program available at:

National Symphony Orchestra will present Verdi’s “Requiem”

The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (OSNCR) together with the National Symphonic Choir, add more than 150 artists on stage, who will perform the IV Concert of the Official Season 2023 of the OSNCR. The musical program corresponds to one of the works of the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi: “Requiem Table”.

The concert will be offered on Friday, May 26, at 8 pm; and on Sunday, May 28 at 10:30 am, at the National Theater of Costa Rica.

The concert will be given under the baton of the chief conductor, Carl St. Clair, and will feature guest soloists from Germany, the United States, and Mexico: María Kalesidis, soprano; Margaret Lattimore, mezzo-soprano; Carlos Galvan, tenor; and Andrew Stuckey, bass.

Ticket prices range from ₡8,400 colones to ₡51,600 colones, and can be purchased at: boleteria.teatronacional.go.cr. A 40% discount will be applied for seniors and students with a card at the physical ticket office.

Play of “La Quinceañera”, promotes respect for the differences and value of each person. On Saturday, May 27, 6 pm, Multipurpose Room, Civic Center for Peace, Desamparados. Free admission.

Visual arts

Visit the exhibition “National Hall of Visual Arts 2023”, which opens the MAC this May 25, at 7 pm, at its facilities, in La Sabana. The exhibition will exhibit 48 selected works, by 38 artists, in three categories: two-dimensional, three-dimensional and other media. It opens this Thursday and is maintained during the regular hours of the Museum of Costa Rican Art. The exhibition will remain open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm, with free admission.

Music

The musical group “Los Plancha Pop” will present a concert where they bring together the hits of the “plancha” and mix them with pop, jazz and funk. Friday May 26, 7 pm, Auditorium Juan Rafael Mora PorrasCultural Historical Museum Juan Santamaria., located in Alajuela. Free entry for all public.
