Cultural Space “M/Darbnīca” Celebrates Three Years of Jazz, Art, and Culture

Cultural space “M/Darbnīca”, which in three years has become an important meeting place of modern jazz, art and other cultural spheres, invites everyone to its birthday celebrations this week.

Over the course of three years, more than 450 cultural events have been realized in the cultural space “M/Darbnīca”, including almost 200 jazz music concerts and “jam sessions”, a hundred concerts on the stage of Brian’s courtyard, as well as 40 art exhibitions.

The birthday will be celebrated throughout the week with music and art events.

The celebration will begin on Wednesday, October 4, a friend of the cultural space “M/Darbnīca” and a great trombonist Vadims Dmitrijevs, who brought his associates from Hamburg to Latvia – guitarist Karl M Pennar, drummer Alex Petratos and bassist Yuriy Natsvlishvili. During his short career, Vadim has already become well known in all Baltic jazz circles, performing together with popular Latvian musicians, as well as playing in such prestigious jazz orchestras as the Latvian Radio Big Band and the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra.

On October 5, the exhibition “M Bodies” by artist Gunta Lante will be opened in “M/Galerie”. The name of the exhibition is derived from the English word “embody”, which means “to embody” or “to include in oneself”. In her works, the artist invites visitors to feel at home in their body – to feel good during the viewing of the exhibition, no matter what everyday life is like. In her works, the author seeks and tries to highlight the core and essence of a person, which can also be called the spirit or soul, taking into account the experience, behavior and inner strength of each person. The visual emphasis is placed on naked bodies, underlining that a person is actually naked and vulnerable in this life, but what is important is the content of the individual.

On October 6, the indie/electronic music duo “Bel Tempo” will perform on the second floor of the cultural space, whose members Andis Ansons and Jūlijs Melngailis are musically influenced by such artists as “Caribou”, “Jungle”, “Toro y Moi” and others. “Bel Tempo” combines soulful beats and sounds of analog synthesizers with bare vocals and pulsating guitar riffs, creating a danceable and at the same time intimate atmosphere,” is how this duo is described by connoisseurs of the two men’s work.

The celebrations will be concluded on October 7, when its jazz “house band” will perform in the “M/Darbnīca” cultural space, followed by an open “jam session”. Saxophonist Toms Rudzinskis, pianist Toms Mikals, drummer Kaspars Kurdeko, as well as bass guitarist Yuris Natsvlišvili will take the stage as the main line-up.
