Son of parents from Extremadura who emigrated to the Basque Country, Celes Duarte Sereno was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz in an undisclosed year and in his younger years what he liked most was going with his grandmother and his older sister to the ‘Women’s Day’ sessions. ‘, which had a lower price, in the Ideal Cinema room. It was Celes who, without realizing it, became imbued with that love and fondness that his grandmother had for the seventh art and actors. So it was that at just over ten years old Celes participated in his first play and at fourteen he already announced at home that he wanted to do theater.

They should not have taken him seriously and before he grew too old to rebel they sent him to paint with his uncle. He learned and worked as a ‘house painter’ but without neglecting either his university studies or his love for theater. He graduated in Contemporary History from the University of the Basque Country and at the age of twenty-two he left Vitoria and began his career in the independent theater of the eighties, in the Bilbao of industrial reconversion.
In his first years in the profession.
From then on, there were countless courses and training in voice, singing, masks, mime and pantomime, improvisation, body expression, dance, fencing, theatrical wrestling, circus and acrobatics, ballet taught, among others, by Lindsay Kemp, Albert Boadella, Eric Thames, Etelvino Vázquez or Johny Melville. And although he was always very aware that as an actor he had to master many facets, body expression and stage direction captured him. The first led him towards dance and, despite not being a dancer, he did not miss the opportunity to join a dance school where he was a teacher and director for 35 years. The second, and thanks to a scholarship in stage direction and text analysis at William Layton’s acting laboratory in Madrid, focused him towards directing.

As an actor he has participated in national and international festivals, as well as in several films, short films and television. Experiences that allowed him to direct and teach for 16 years in the Theater Classroom of the Álava Campus of the University of the Basque Country, with more than a dozen shows written and directed.
There is no lesser job for Celes Duarte in the field of acting and directing. Nothing escapes her interest and also her critical eye. She has worked and lived in the three Basque capitals, in Madrid and has toured the country reciting, another of her passions. She has been in Avilés for two years. A city that also breathes love for theater. She has not settled here for work, it goes without saying, but it is an incentive for him to know that there is movement and to be a participant in it.
It has collaborated with the La Serrana Cultural Association imparting initiation courses to theater for beginners and amateurs in 2022 and 2023.
