Bulls, women and solidarity come together in the San Miguel festivities in Cuéllar. The town council has announced the line-up for the mixed bullfight that will be held on September 29th to mark the town’s patron saint and with Aurelio Hernando’s bulls that will star in the morning’s bull run. The bet is for a mixed bullfight made up entirely of women and from which 1 euro for each ticket sold will be donated to breast cancer research. The line-up is made up of the female bullfighter Rocío Arrogante, and the female bullfighters María del Mar Santos and Carla Otero.

“Bullfighting has always been beneficial. It was done last year at the “Cutouts” festival and this year at San Miguel, for every ticket we sell, we are going to donate one euro to breast cancer research,” says the mayor of the town, Carlos Fraile, while thanking the provincial association and the Cuéllar delegation for their work in support of research and the help they provide to families. At least two buses from France are expected in Cuéllar on Sunday, September 29 to enjoy the festival and the running of the bulls. “The expectation for that day is great,” adds Fraile.
Both the young bullfighters and the rancher are happy with their presence in Cuéllar. Aurelio Hernando explains that the bulls are of the Veragua breed, of which there are very few and that they are working to take care of them as much as possible so that they can be used for all the thirds. “It is a nice bullfight that can charge quite well and with expectations that it will do well in the bull run. This cattle is used to being moved from a young age on horseback and the handling of the bull run will not surprise them much. It is a cattle that tends to group together and that is an advantage for a bull run as long as this one,” he points out.
For their part, the young bullfighters María del Mar Santos and Carla Otero are excited about their participation in the Cuellar bullfight and consider the purpose for which it is celebrated to be praiseworthy. María del Mar wanted to stand in front of the bull since she was 7 years old. “When they proposed that I participate I was very excited and when they told me the reason I didn’t hesitate. Since they told me they have created an extra excitement and we are looking forward to the day,” she says. Before bullfighting in Cuellar she will return to Peru to train. Carla, for her part, also faces the Cuellar bullfight with even more enthusiasm after having started bullfighting after the serious goring she suffered last year that kept her away from the bullrings for eight months.
