Hugging Away the Pain: Students Bring Joy to Seriously Ill Children
Imagine a world suddenly turned upside down, where the carefree laughter of childhood is replaced by the fear and uncertainty of a serious illness. This is the reality for countless children battling heart defects, rare skin conditions like epidermolysis bullosa, or facing developmental challenges.
But two students from Nijmegen HAN Communication course, Sanneke Haas and Lara van Rosmalen, are determined to bring a glimmer of joy to these young lives through their heartwarming project, "Project Cuddly Bear."
“Suppose you are told that you are very ill or that someone you know is not doing well at all," they remind us. "Then your world will suddenly turn upside down."
Project Cuddly Bear aims to fund groundbreaking research and offer direct support to foundations dedicated to improving the lives of these children. Their belief is simple: even small gestures can make a huge difference.
Hugs and Hope:
In recent weeks, Project Cuddly Bear has made significant strides. A campaign for the De Inkleur Porsche Foundation, which provides relief and joy to seriously ill children, saw the collection of over 750 cuddly toys – a true testament to the power of kindness.
This was followed by a successful fundraising drive for the Hartekin Foundation, an organization committed to helping children with heart disease.
"Knuffelbear shows that help can also be done without much time and money," Haas and van Rosmalen emphasized.
Continuing the Journey of Hope:
With the end of the year approaching, Project Cuddly Bear is continuing its mission of spreading warmth and cheer. In the final weeks of 2024, the project will partner with the Vlinderkind Foundation and the Over the Rainbow for Maud Foundation, organizations that support children with rare diseases and those battling serious illnesses.
"Are you giving a moment of joy again to children who are seriously ill?" the students ask. "Also put in via Knuffelbeer. Small or big, it doesn’t matter. With your donation you will be contributing to a bright space for a child who could really use it.”

## Cuddly Bears and Compassion: Students Bring comfort to Seriously Ill Children
**Introduction**
Every day, countless children face the daunting reality of serious illnesses. From heart defects to rare skin conditions, thes young patients experience a world drastically different from their
peers. But two persistent students from Nijmegen HAN Communication course, Sanneke Haas and Lara van Rosmalen, are proving that even small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Their project, “Project Cuddly Bear,” aims to bring joy to these children while supporting research and foundations dedicated to their well-being.
For this exclusive interview, we spoke with **Dr. Emily Carter**, a child psychologist specializing in pediatric illnesses, and **Ms. Sanneke Haas**, co-founder of Project Cuddly Bear, to gain deeper insights into this heartwarming initiative and its impact.
### The Power of a Cuddly Companion
**Worl-Today-News:** Dr. Carter, what is the meaning of comfort items like cuddly toys for children dealing with serious illnesses?
**Dr. Emily Carter:** For children facing medical challenges, a cuddly toy becomes more than just a toy. It represents security, comfort, and a sense of normalcy during a time of immense uncertainty. These items provide a tangible source of comfort, helping children cope with anxiety, fear, and loneliness.
**World-Today-News:** Sanneke, can you share how Project Cuddly Bear came to be and its initial goals?
**Sanneke Haas:** Lara and I were deeply moved by the stories of children facing serious illnesses. We realized that even a small gesture, like providing a cuddly toy, could brighten their day and offer a sense of hope.
Our initial goal was simple: collect as many cuddly toys as possible for children in hospitals and care centers. What we discovered was a profound desire within our community to make a difference.
### Spreading Smiles, Funding Research
Project Cuddly Bear has partnered with several organizations. What criteria do you use for selecting these partners, Sanneke?
**Sanneke Haas**: We carefully choose organizations that align with our mission of supporting children with serious illnesses. We prioritize foundations that focus on research, direct patient care, and creating joyful experiences for these children and their families.
**World-Today-News:** Dr. Carter, from a psychological standpoint, how dose Project Cuddly Bear’s approach of combining tangible gifts with fundraising benefit these children?
**Dr. Emily Carter:** This dual approach is incredibly impactful. The cuddly toys provide immediate comfort and joy, while the fundraising efforts contribute to long-term solutions for these children. This creates a sense of interconnectedness and hope, showing these children that they are not alone in their battles.
### Looking Ahead: A Future Filled with Hope
**World-Today-News:** Sanneke, what are your aspirations for the future of Project Cuddly Bear?
**Sanneke Haas:** We envision project Cuddly Bear expanding its reach, touching the lives of even more children across the globe. We also hope to inspire others to embrace acts of kindness, no matter how small, recognizing their potential to create a ripple effect of compassion.
**Key Takeaway:**
Project Cuddly Bear demonstrates the profound impact of simple acts of kindness on the lives of seriously ill children. By combining the comfort of cuddly toys with vital fundraising efforts, this initiative fosters hope, resilience, and a sense of community.
