ChicagoShota Imanaga and two relievers combined to pitch a no-hitter, and the Chicago Cubs, led by Mexican Isaac Paredes, routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 on Monday.
Imanaga, a 31-year-old right-hander in his first season with the Cubs after pitching in Japan for eight seasons, struck out seven and walked two in seven innings. He threw 95 pitches, including 66 strikes.
Imanaga needed 25 pitches to get through the second inning. His season-high is 103 against St. Louis on June 25. He has not gotten a single out in the eighth inning.
Nate Pearson pitched a three-man eighth inning and Porter Hodge pitched a perfect ninth as the Cubs recorded their 18th no-hitter in their history. They had not done so since June 24, 2021, when Zach Davies, Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin and Craig Kimbrel combined for a two-no-hitter against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.
Chicago’s players celebrated when shortstop Dansby Swanson threw to first baseman Michael Busch for the final out after a groundout by Oneil Cruz.
However, the celebration was more subdued than usual after a no-hitter by a single pitcher.
Chicago had not thrown a no-hitter at Wrigley Field since Milt Pappas did so against San Diego on Sept. 2, 1972.
Wednesday’s game was the fourth no-hitter this season, following individual achievements by Dominican Ronel Blanco for Houston against Toronto on April 1, Dylan Cease of San Diego on July 25 in Washington, and Blake Snell of San Francisco, on April 2 in Cincinnati.
For the Pirates, Dominicans Cruz 0-for-4, Bryan de la Cruz 0-for-3.
For the Cubs, Mexican Isaac Paredes went 0-for-2 with one run scored. Puerto Rican Luis Vázquez went 0-for-1. Panamanian Miguel Amaya went 0-for-4.
