Cuba’s oldest woman dies at 114

Relatives of Emilia Tejeda Tejeda, the oldest woman in Cuba, reported on social networks about her death at the age of 114, in the municipality of Niquero, in the province of Granma.

“Today my family is in mourning, since last night at 11 pm a person who is very dear to the town and my family said goodbye: my great-grandmother Emilia Tejeda Tejeda, better known to all as mom,” wrote Yoel Sánchez Martínez, great-grandson of the deceased.

In the same way, the Cuban journalist Alberto Ortiz Peralta indicated that the woman was close to dying at the age of 115, since she left just over a month after her next birthday, on June 29.

“The oldest old woman in Cuba, who lived in Niquero, has just passed away. Emilia Tejeda Tejeda, the oldest old woman in Cuba, and possibly in the world: 114 years, 10 months and 20 days”.

The elderly woman’s family indicated that her burial took place on Sunday afternoon in that town.

“Emilia was born on June 29, 1908, at the moment she leads the list in one of the top three places in Cuba, for longevity. She would be on the 29th of her 115th birthday. In the community of El Hondón, in the municipality of Niquero, in the province of Granma, there are no words for the people and family to express so much pain for the loss of their mother, but at the same time, with the joy of living the very real story of to be seeing a person of more than a century of life”, concluded Sánchez Martínez.

The communicator Ortiz Peralta indicated that the old woman maintained her mental lucidity until the last moment.

“It was a privilege to meet her, not only because of the miracle represented by her longevity and mental capacity until the last minute, but also because of the greatness contained in the best human values,” added the reporter.

Emilia maintained “her mental capacity until the last minute,” said the journalist from the community television channel Portada Visión de Niquero. Her longevity and her lucidity were the work of a “miracle,” said Ortiz Peralta, who praised “the greatness contained in the best human values” of the old woman.

The old woman was born months before the triumph of José Miguel Gómez, of the Liberal Party, in the 1908 elections, and she was 50 years old when Fidel Castro came to power.
