“Cuba’s Abdala and Soberana Vaccines: Quality, Safety, and Proven Efficacy in Fighting Covid-19”

In an act of homage to the developers and producers of these immunogens, the director of that entity, Olga Lidia Jacobo Casanueva, explained that the drugs meet the established requirements in terms of quality, safety and proven efficacy in the immunization of the population that the country carried out against Covid-19.

Three years after the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, asked scientists and researchers to create their own vaccines to combat the disease, generated by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, this achievement has allowed Cuba not to register since August 2022 deaths from this cause and contagion control.

Three months after the request made by the Cuban president, Soberana was presented, the first vaccine candidate and shortly after Abdala, which facilitated the authorization for the emergency use of vaccines, given the number of confirmed positives registered by the country.

In the case of Abdala, it was the first anti-SARS-CoV-2 developed and produced in Latin America and the Caribbean, authorized on July 9, 2021 for use in adults, after knowing the results of its phase III clinical trial, which demonstrated an efficacy of 92.28 percent in the prevention of symptomatic disease.

The experts and scientists ratified the safety that distinguishes the Cuban vaccines against Covid-19, firstly due to the very nature of the technological platforms used and secondly because they have high thermo-stability.

Unlike others that require special conditions for storage, at freezing temperatures, ours can be stored between two and eight degrees Celsius.

During the clinical studies carried out, an efficacy greater than 90 percent was demonstrated, but the most important evidence was the impact achieved in reducing the transmission of the disease in Cuba, as of October 2021, when it reached 60 percent immunization with Abdala and Soberana.

To this was added that they were effective against the Omicron variant, the most infectious of that disease known to date.

At the end of May 18, the country had supplied 44 million 362 thousand doses of the Cuban Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala vaccines.

In the act of recognition of its creators, the status of High Technology Company was also awarded to the Finlay Institute of Vaccines and an important group of institutions that supported the creation and development of vaccines were honored, in addition to the permanent legacy of the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro, promoter of biotechnology in the country.

Cuba is today among the 10 countries with the most citizens immunized against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, including the pediatric population, which raises the level of protection to more than 90 percent.
