Mexican authorities carried out a joint operation that led to the discovery of almost 300 undocumented migrants, including Cubans, who were kept crammed inside a house in Pueblo.
According to an official statement, federal and local authorities managed to dismantle this human trafficking operation in the municipality of Chalchicomula de Sesma thanks to an anonymous call that warned about possible illegal activity.
This call alerted the Municipal Public Security Directorate about the presence of many foreign people in a single house located on 9 Sur and Barranca de San Cayetano streets.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers found 270 undocumented immigrants, who were originally from Cuba, Guatemala and El Salvador. The migrants were distributed in all spaces of the house, including the patio.
After being rescued, the foreigners revealed that they had spent four days under these overcrowded conditions, while they waited for coyotes to transport them to the border between Mexico and the United States.
According to the local press Processthe rescued migrants were transferred to the Municipal Presidency facilities, where they were checked by paramedics to confirm that they were in good health.
After that, they were placed in the custody of the National Migration Institute (INM), while the National Guard (GN) was also notified to take charge of the situation.
This incident is only the most recent of these cases, since kidnappings and extortion are among the multiple dangers to which Cuban migrants are exposed when traveling illegally to the United States.
Those who venture to cross the American continent often hire the services of coyotes, who charge exorbitant amounts of money in exchange for supposedly “safe” passage to the border.
However, many times these coyotes are discovered by the authorities, which is why the Cubans end up in the custody of the INM. Additionally, multiple cases have been reported in which migrants are abandoned by these people at the slightest sign of danger, so these must be rescued from inside homes or from containers left on the side of the roads..
